The Ladykillers

The Ladykillers
I really enjoyed watching The LadyKillers last night. It was very amusing to see Tom Hanks playing the bad guy for a change. To me, Hanks has always been the sympathetic, naïve Forest Gump kind of guy! This movie though showed a different side of him.

I addition to Hanks’ change of persona, the camera work in this flick was really impressive so was the dialogue.

We watched the movie while munching on some disastrous brownies I made last night! It was my first attempt at making brownies and the result was mediocre. They tasted more like chocolate cake than brownies! Ah well, they were still edible and we enjoyed them.

Week’s highlights

The highlight of this week was yet another successful cooking story. It was Chicken Divan with Broccoli Casserole. I got the recipe from my sister Brigitte and the result was really fantastic. Jeff insists it was the best of all my dishes so far. Not bad!

In other developments, we are in the process of getting Jeff a driving license. As he is the proud holder of an American driving license, all he needs to do to get a Qatari one is to fill some paper work. It is an entirely different case for me, as I happen to have a license issued from a Middle Eastern country.

To get a Qatari license, I have to take both written and driving exams along with doing some other tedious paper work. I decided to pass on this for now and give the pleasure of driving in this country to my dear husband. Hopefully, we’ll get the license tomorrow and then we are off to rent a car.

Meanwhile, this week we had more than our share of watching crappy movies. We saw a lot, but the two that annoyed me the most were 50 First Dates and Laws of Attraction. They both smothered me with their cheesiness.

Quick update

Yesterday, we spent the evening with Amal. She invited us over to her new place, where we had a great time, chatting and laughing about life in Doha in particular, and the Arab World in general. Her new apartment is very nice and cozy. She definitely worked hard on it. I so loved the couches!

In separate developments:

  1. Jeff finally got his Qatari residency, yippee!!! This means he doesn’t need to leave the country every month to renew his visa. Now he is a proud resident of Qatar 😉
  2. I made cucumber and yogurt salad few days ago. And let me tell you, it was very good. Yeah, Im getting arrogant!
  3. My Spanish/English friend Pilar called me the other day from London. We chatted for more than half an hour and it was great. I really miss her and miss the wonderful times we spent together wandering the streets of London.
  4. I’m reading a great book nowadays. It’s called I, the Divine. It is a very entertaining story about the eventful life of a woman who is an American-Lebanese Druze. The author’s writing style is unique: very creative, witty and amusing.
  5. It is very hot and humid here in Qatar. The mere idea of leaving the luxury of our 24/7 air-conditioned apartment is very disturbing. It’s in the 40’s (40 °C equals 104 Farhenheit for those stateside) with 40% humidity. We are thinking car rental now that Jeff can finally get a Qatari driver’s license.
