Banned items

As part of my desperate efforts to lose a minimum of five kilos in two months, I have decided to write down a list of banned items, which I should not approach or even fantasize about. Here’s the list of no-no’s:

  • French fries
  • Burger
  • Fried chicken
  • Beer
  • Chips
  • Chocolate
  • Ice cream
  • Sweets

So far I have not sinned. Let’s see if I can sustain the will-power. Staying away from chocolate is killing me. I’m now going through the "withdrawal" phase!

The weather girl was right!

Rain in Doha from our windowsillThe weather girl was right. She predicted rain, a rarity in Doha, and it happened! Here is a picture from our kitchen window of this uncommon occurrence. Click it for an enlargement where you can almost make out what proved to be a downpour.

For those who haven’t met the weather girl, click here to go down below the “Blogs I’m following” section. Here you’ll find an animated icon that predicts the weather in Doha, or where ever you desire once you set it up. The cool thing about this weather girl is that she changes her attire according to the temperature. Last night she was holding an umbrella. How cool is that?

Morning surfing

Bill GatesMy morning surfing resulted in this. A picture of a young Bill Gates. Now isn’t this just hilarious? Geez, he looks like such a nerd!

The Fox BlockerAnother amusing thing I found was the FOX blocker.

Hate Fox news and their right wing propaganda? Then block them with this inline fliter that keeps their TV signal at bay.

I also found an active committee that protects the rights of bloggers. Neat no?

On a separate note, there are continuing updates to newswire, coming on a near daily basis, but very few seem to notice all of our hard work 🙁

So here are some highlights:

An ‘Incredible’ viewing

IncWe just got back from the movies where the film of choice was The Incredibles, and what an incredible movie it was! From the top-notch animation to the highly amusing plot and witty dialogue, this movie is really a work of art. It is so imaginative, filled with creativity and loads of fun. It also sends some subliminal political messages, which makes it even more enjoyable.

I heard so much about The Incredibles, I was over the moon when it finally made it to Qatar. I was not disappointed. The movie was definitely worth every penny we spent … I would watch it again and again!

I just noticed that Roba recently saw the movie and fell in love with it too. Why am I not surprised? It is divine.

Still on the movie topic, I thought I’d discuss the movies I’ve recently seen. Here’s my list:

S.W.A.T: A typical guys’ movie with lots of clichés and a mediocre plot. The action scenes are nothing special and the acting is very disappointing, especially from a legend like Samuel L. Jackson. If you are a woman and were made to watch this movie by your partner, don’t panic. There is one thing worth watching: Colin Farwell. And no, I’m not referring to his acting skills

Kill Bill 2: Yes. It is Tarnatino. And yes, it is supposed to be good! The movie was fine, don’t get me wrong. It was just not as captivating as the first one. The martial arts scenes were few and far between and not near as impressive as the ones found in the first part, where Uma Thurman really kicked ass. Also the movie ended on a very happy note, not so Tarantino-like.

The Company: A dull movie about even more dull dancers. I slept through it and kept waking up every 15 minutes hoping for the story to develop. Nothing happened. The dancers kept dancing to no end! Why would they even label it as movie? Those behind it could have saved faced if they just called it "documentary." Ah well!

Mosaic coasters

Mosaic coaster

I haven’t talked much about the gifts we received for Christmas. We were really grateful and very thankful for those that generously and selflessly demonstrated the Christmas spirit of giving.

One of our favorite Christmas gifts, which we continue to admire and marvel at most every day, is a set of mosaic coasters made in my home town of Madaba.

They really are beautiful. They were given to us by Mark and Brigitte when we were in Jordan. What is unique about them is that they display Jordanian themes. One theme is the black Iris -– Jordan’s national flower. How cool is that?

We are so happy with this generous present that we are thinking of getting yet more of those coasters when we go to Jordan and giving them as gifts to friends and family abroad. They definitely make phenomenal gifts for both Jordanian and non-Jordanian alike.
