Jordan’s Radisson SAS issues statement on bombing

I just received this press release from the owner of the Radisson SAS hotel bombed earlier today:

We are the owners of Radisson SAS Jordan. As the owners we want to send deep condolences to all the staff and guests. We are deeply shocked and obviously condemn such acts. We very briefly want to set the record straight on 2 points. Firstly, news reports have been indicating that the Radisson SAS was specifically attacked because it is an American hotel and has hosted Israelis. I want to make it clear that the Radisson SAS is a Scandinavian chain and owned by Palestinian-Jordanians. Furthermore, the Radisson SAS owners and staff represent the strongest supporters out of all the hotels in Jordan for the Palestinian and Iraqi people. We have expressed our support throughout the decades and will continue to do so.

In deep sadness,
Mary Nazzal, Owner Representative for Radisson SAS Hotels Jordan

A number of media outlets have been referring to the hotels targeted in the bombings as "American hotels." CNN is one of those doing so. This press release directly disputes this claim. I just hope they get a copy of it.

  1. First of all, thank you for publishing the hotel’s press release. But it pisses me off that they need to even defend themselves like that!! So what if they hosted Israelis-Jordan signed peace with it’s neighbour and these groups that carried out last night’s terrorist attacks should GET OVER IT. They should do something useful with themselves like ensure better schooling for their Muslim communities because as ashamed as I am to admit it, only Muslims could have carried out such an act.

  2. Excuse me Amal?? “only Muslims could have carried out such an act” Was Timothy McVeigh a Muslim? Are the IRA Muslim? Those are two counterexamples to your premise – I am sure we could find even more.

  3. natasha thanx for publishing the press release. i noticed that too in the american coverage. the other annoying thing was that american coverage was like, “Oh i hope americans did not get hurt.” i guess an arabs blood is not the same worth as an american.
and amal, lets not say something thats gonna cause a bunch of people to call you things that will make you look bad.
remember, only tolerance can bring peace, not ignorance or violence.

  4. THIS IS WHAT MAKES ME VERY ANGRY!!!! THE AUTHORITIES KNEW BUT DID NOT WARN US.
Israelis evacuated from Amman hotel hours before bombings
    By Yoav Stern, Haaretz Correspondent
A number of Israelis staying on Wednesday at the Radisson hotel were evacuated before the bombing by Jordanian security forces, apparently due to a specific security alert. They were escorted back to Israel by security personnel.
The Foreign Ministry stated Wednesday that no Israeli tourists are known to have been injured in the blasts. Representatives of Israel’s embassy in Amman were in contact with local authorities to examine any report of injured Israelis, but none were received. There are often a number of Israeli businessman and tourists in Amman, including in the hotels hit Wednesday.
Israel’s counter-terror headquarters on Wednesday recommended Israeli citizens not travel in Jordan. Travel warnings regarding Jordan were tightened a few months ago, but many Israelis still visit the country. Many also visit other regions such as the Jordanian Arava and the ancient city of Petra.

  5. The bombers were the best examples of unbelievers/apostates out there. No one who specifically targets men, women and children of any nationality is a believer. Not in Islam or any religion.

  6. I just read the Ha’aretz article, too. Sakhafaaf (if I copied it correctly) is spreading another libel, similar to the one that stated that Jews were warned about the 9/11 attack. STOP THIS!
My condolences all of those in Jordan who were affected by this outrageous act. Natasha, I hope your family is okay. And to think that a wedding could be attacked like that makes me sick!

  7. Actually, Chaya, the Haaretz article DID say Israelis were evacuated several hours prior to the bombings.
About eight hours later, Yoav Stern, the writer of that article, retracted his earlier statements and said Israelis were not evacuated prior to the bombings but immediately after.
He rewrote the article and added updates including statement of responsibility from Al Qaida in Iraq, the outfit run by Zarqawi.
He used the term “contrary to earlier reports”. Those earlier reports came from HAARETZ itself.
So Fawaz and Chaya don’t start assuming libel.
It was HAARETZ which first reported pre-bombing evacuations and in the same URL several hours later retracted its story.
Sakhafaat merely pasted the early version.

  8. The very concept of explosive belts was designed and implemented by the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka in the early 1980s.
The Tamil Tigers are not Muslim.

  9. Chaya, it find your expression of symbathy to be rather nasty when your army kills arab innocents all the time. Don’t add inslut to our injury by trying to score political and hasbara point at a time when we are still counting our dead.

  10. Sakaffat,
Can you stop your Sakhafat now and focus on the barbaric attacks that happened in Jordan and stop worrying about what the Israelis are doing…! At this moment of my life, I do not care about anything besides the attack in Jordan…! You should do the same if you really care about your country..

  11. Seems four palestinian officials were killed in the attacks, Aljazeera tv is saying.
One was a Brigadier General in charge of military intelligence and the other a colonel I believe in charge of preventive security.
The other two were a senior Palestinian banker and the commercial attache at the Palestinian embassy in Cairo.
No further details on other nationalities.
Chinese foreign ministry has said three Chinese were among those killed.
US officials are saying at least one American killed, and several others wounded.

  12. Natasha – all this talk about Israel is just a way to deflect away from the real issue here: that fundamentalists are trying to destabilize the Jordanian govt. and threaten the monarchy in order to establish a Wahabi version of Islam there.

  13. This just in from Reuters, via MSNBC:
    Updated: 2:39 p.m. ET Nov. 9, 2005
AMMAN – A blast at the Radisson hotel in the Jordanian capital Amman on Wednesday was caused by a bomb placed in a false ceiling, police sources at the scene told Reuters.

    Chaya,
All this talk about Israel came from … Israel itself. Once again, it was HAARETZ which ran the original article and it was HAARETZ which retracted its earlier statement.
I suggested you write HAARETZ and tell them exactly what you wrote here.

  14. RE: Ceiling bomb
The ceiling bomb report popped out in the early hours after the attack and the date of the story referenced here is 9 November; it’s old. Since that timen it’s been confirmed, albeit not officially, that it was a suicide bomber. Apparently there is full video of the arrival of both of these guys and detonation; there’s vehicle footage too from Days Inn.
Additionally, there have been quotes from a number of witnesses that said a man entered, headed towards the bar initially — looking nervous — then saw the wedding party and made his way there, apparently to exact the most vicious carnage.
The initial ceiling story was running alongside the rumor that the wedding was targeted specifically. I believe that idea has been nixed in light of the video footage and eyewitness testimony.

  15. Natasha, glad to know your family is safe! I couldn’t know anything about my family till early this morning, they’re fine, thank God!

  16. The Muslim and Arab world is outraged by the Amman bombings. That’s a good thing. But I hope they can extend those sentiments to the killing of innocents anywhere, anytime.
Arab press is calling this an intolerable crime.
UAE’s Gulf Today called it a heinous act and criminal aggression.
Even Hamas and the PA condemned these acts in the strongest of terms. I hope that means no suicide bombings there.
Meanwhile, the Israel evacuation story (or denial) is getting play in some US media outlets.

    From the Los Angeles Times:

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that Israelis staying at the Radisson on Wednesday had been evacuated before the attacks and escorted back home “apparently due to a specific security threat.”

Amos N. Guiora, a former senior Israeli counter-terrorism official, said in a phone interview with The Times that sources in Israel had also told him about the pre-attack evacuations.

“It means there was excellent intelligence that this thing was going to happen,” said Guiora, a former leader of the Israel Defense Forces who now heads the Institute for Global Security Law and Policy at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. “The question that needs to be answered is why weren’t the Jordanians working at the hotel similarly removed?”

  17. So, lets see according Ms. Nazzal the bombers just made a mistake. You see ,the Hilton across the road–that is one the hosts Jews and Westerners, that is one that should have been bombed. When will people understand that Israel is often just an excuse, the fact that Ms. Nazzal doesn’t wear a hijab infuriates them more (whether or not she does, I really don’t know). The fact that people stay at that hotel and drink alcohol and (gasp) have eaten pork in their lives–get those Westerners out of Jordan!!!
Here would have been a better response
“We at SAS unequivacally condemn this bombing. The bombers claim that we were targeted because we host Jews and Westerners. Yes, we do, and we have nothing to be ashamed for that. We host people of all nationalities, races, religions. The bombers never thought to ask us our our political opinions, the bombers never thought to engage us in discussion, their goal was to kill. Did they not realize that they would kill mostly Jordanians in Jordan? Yes,they did, because its worth killing 20 Jordanians who were probably engaged in mixed dancing at a wedding as long as they could reach 1 Westerner. And why was that westerner here? Well, probably for business reasons, probably helping the economy and providing jobs for average Jordanians”
Her response is sickening. Could you imagine back in the day a KKK member bombing a white church and then the pastor coming out and saying “dam you KKK members–you meant to blow up the black church next door, not us, we are good white folk like you.”

  18. Neb, – I beg to differ!!!
The response from SAS was clear, and neutral from your accusations. It responded to incorrect media information, and added the value of food for thought about the Hotel.
Ms. Nazzal’s creed is of no one’s business, and by far no person on this planet has the right to judge another for their religion or the way they dress.
Clearly the misunderstanding and your own line of thought’s in other’s words is what makes you sick,,,,,,

  19. i’m sorry, at a time like this, she couldn’t bear the fact that her hotel was accused of hosting westerners and jews. who gives a crap. she clearly was telling the bombers that there reason for bombing her hotel was incorrect.
opps, I’m sorry, you bombed us because we let westerners and jews stay here…oh my, but you are so wrong, you see I don’t like westerners and jews just as much as you.
When your hotel is bombed, I would think you could come up with a better statement than correcting the reason why the bombers bombed your hotel.
I stand by my statement. Her respose was pretty sickening.
